10 meals for under $10 on the Gold Coast

THE cost of dining out can sometimes be difficult to stomach – unless you’re savvy enough to sniff out a tasty bargain.

The Gold Coast has a smorgasbord of cheap eat options – if you know where to look for them.

A great place to start is your local pub, RSL, leagues or bowls club.

Southport Bowls Club chef Tony Halliday reckons the way to a customer’s heart is through a classic, inexpensive dish.

“It gets people in the doors,” he says.

“My theory is if you offer good quality, fresh meals that people enjoy they’ll keep coming back.

“You don’t need fancy meals. You just need a good, wholesome, hearty meal.

“Our battered flathead is a favourite and so is shepherd’s pie – they’re our most popular dishes.

“People are always looking for a bargain and they always want value for money.”

TOP TIPS FOR CHEAP EATING ON THE COAST

– Dine outside of peak times when restaurants have to work harder to draw a crowd. This could mean meeting up with friends on a weeknight or going out for lunch or breakfast instead of the always pricier dinner time.

– If you want to go out at night, many places offer early bird discounts for parties who are in and out before a certain time.

– Fine dining can take a massive bite out of your budget, however, a number of upmarket restaurants slash prices in low season. Among them is Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa, which has cut the price of their seafood buffet from $62 to $45 for lunch and $79 to $55 for dinner during the week until the end of September (conditions apply). Also try checking out newspaper ads, junk mail, the back of shopping dockets and the website of the restaurant you are about to visit for discounts.

– Some social media-savvy places will even offer special prices to their fans or those who “check-in” on their smartphones.
